Let’s Get This Straight: Standard vs XLJ vs XL

By Kirsti Smouse

August 31, 2015

What’s the difference between Oakley’s standard lenses and those labeled XLJ or XL?

First off, let’s clarify that standard vs XLJ vs XL is strictly about LENSES. Not frames.

This distinction is quite important.

Some frame models offer more than one size of lens, but the frame itself does not differ in size specifications. For example, if you purchased Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ sunglasses, what you have are Flak Jacket frames with XLJ lenses installed.

If the box only says “Flak Jacket,” then your sunglasses came installed with standard lenses.

The standard and XLJ lenses are interchangeable within a frame style.

Standard lenses are shorter (top to bottom) and feature a more rounded cut to the bottom of the lens.

XLJ lenses are longer and have a wave-like cut along the bottom. These lenses provide more coverage than the standard lenses.

XLJ lenses are available for Oakley Half Jacket and Flak Jacket.

Here is a breakdown in lens specs for each model:

Oakley Half Jacket Standard lenses
Oakley Half jacket xlj lenses

Oakley Flak Jacket lenses
Oakley Flak Jacket Standard lenses
Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ lenses

XL Lenses

XL lenses are similar to the XLJ in that they’re typically longer than the standard lenses. However, XLJ lenses and XL lenses are not the same lens and are not interchangeable, as they are for different frames.

The standard and XL lenses are interchangeable within a frame style.*

XL lenses are available for Half Jacket 2.0, Flak 2.0, Bottlecap, Fast Jacket, Radar, and Radarlock.

Half Jacket 2.0 lenses
Oakley Half Jacket 2.0 Standard lenses
Oakley Half Jacket 2.0 XL lenses

Oakley Flak 2.0 lenses
Oakley Flak 2.0 Standard lenses
Oakley Flak 2.0 XL lenses
Line
Oakley Bottlecap lenses
Line
Oakley Fast Jacket lenses
Oakley Fast Jacket Standard lenses
Oakley Fast Jacket XL lenses

To sum up, the difference between these lenses comes down to size and shape. So long as you match up the correct frame, either the standard or its longer cousin will fit.

If you’re thinking of replacing your lenses and aren’t 100% sure which style you’ve got, feel free to add a picture to the comments below or send a message to our support team. We’ll be happy to sort you out.

*Radar and RadarLock are the exception on lenses fitting interchangeably between XL and standard. Due to the way the nose piece connects to the frame, XL lenses will only fit Radar XL and RadarLock XL. And the same goes with standard lenses — they won’t fit their XL counterpart. Nicely done Kirsti, I'm an Oakley victim since the get-go, and have antient WHITE, uhggg, M's (that could be used on a period Movie set) NEW'r M's, 2 differant "1/2 Jackets", 1 from Oakley store & Jappy catalog knock offs. There was a point in life where I was going thru Oakley brand Lenses like staff hits Red-Bulls at Google's HQ! Therefore, I Luv Revant, not to mention how MUCH $$$s your TEAM has saved me! More, I swear I asked the Q. you put SO well above a dozen times of the support-team B-4 I felt confident enough with a response to order them. I AM an avid MTB'r, I ordered & got HD XLJ Lenses for both of my 1/2 Jackets, & THEY FIT PERFECT!! I'm a Design / Bldr by profession & really DIG the way you spelled out the reality of your "Let's get this Straight" piece. Thanks for being a BIG part of an AWESOME American Company! Yours in health,-J

Thanks Kristi - I'm a long time fan of Oakley and about to drop $$$ on a set of prescription sunglasses. Wondering if you can answer a couple of questions.

First, I've read your comments about the XL/XLJ, but I'm lost when it comes to the 2.0 glasses. Some retailers are pushing XL or XLJ, others are pushing Flak 2.0 or XLJ. I've also noticed that the pictures retailers post online are...well...just incorrect. Which of the above photos are for the Flak 2.0/XL/XLJ?

Second, I live in a very sunny place - so iridium, polarization, and prism are really important. Do you have an article on the color combinations that can give better insight into which ones are the best? I'm almost sold on the G30 Gold polarized (favoring contrast and glare).

    Thanks!

Thanks for the information...however, I'm in a bit of a conundrum...I have a set of Oakleys labeled 03-650 inside the frame, a Google search indicates that they are Flak Jacket XLJs. The original lenses are clearly XLJs.

I've ordered a set of lenses off Amazon and they are much too big : http://www.amazon.ca/Revant-Replacement-Lenses-Oakley-Stealth/dp/B00AAHBM5K/ref=sr_1_2?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1450055536&sr=1-2&keywords=revant+oakley+flak+jacket+xlj

The part number off the box (003-03-00-NP-P-00) appears to be for a Flak Jacket XLJ.

See the attached picture to see how they lign up.

The original lens appears to be a bit less than 61mm from the mounting points. The supplied lens is a bit less than 63 mm.

How can I get a set of replacement lenses?

Interesting. Thanks for the clear up. Looking up the sku again, you are correct. I don't understand how I mixed this up again...I checked so many times to confirm they were the right lenses. I'll setup an order for the correct ones now.

    Hi Kristi
I am looking at getting a pair of Oakley M2's and cant decided weather I should go with the standard or the XI lens. [ I am in Australia ] these glasses will be used for cricket [ same thing they would be used for in baseball]. I know that the standard lens curves around your eyes and that is what I want. but I do not know if the XI would better suit my needs. thanks for your time what one would be the better one for me

    Hi Kristi,
I really, really like the fit, lightness and look of the Flak Jackets. Unfortunately I broke my nose when I was young so I have a little raise on the bridge of my nose. This causes the frame to not fully seat on my nose, which in turns causes a gap between my nose and the frame as well as the lens bottoms sitting too high and causing a gap where my cheek is which lets glare sneak under. Any suggestions to modify the width of the bridge area or longer lens to insert?

    Thanks!

I had stumble upon a site that sells the replacement lense, but its for the Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ. Can that lense fit into my Half Jacket XLJ?

Be appreciated if you could enlighten.

    Many thanks indeed.

    Regards,
